ReadingThis is a featured page

The reading project in each Cluster school is focusing on the explicit teaching of reading strategies. Based on First Steps Reading these strategies include:
  • Predicting
  • Connecting
  • Inferring
  • Comparing
  • Synthesising
  • Creating images /visualising
  • Self-questioning
  • Skimming
  • Scanning
  • Determining importance
  • Summarising & paraphrasing
  • Re-reading
  • Reading on
  • Adjusting reading rate
  • Sounding out
  • Chunking
  • Using analogy
  • Consulting a reference
There are examples of Learning by Design placemats which focus on one or more of these strategies. For a start go to the Bonython reading page where you will find some. We have audited these placemats to see which First Steps strategies and activities fit in with the knowledge processes of Learning by Design. Check out this audit which will be very useful when planning your own placemat.

To date, the wonderful Bonython teachers have met to discuss their goals for projetcs, strategies to achieve these, decide on timeframes to achieve each goal and to plan collaboratively. Learning has been designed using the Placemat and links to First Steps Reading with a cooperative learning flair. Very impressive work to date :)

Last Wednesday, BPS staff held a progress meeting to discuss our progress thus far. Executive were very impressed with the work that had been completed and was about to commence. Staff reflected upon and discussed topics such as collecting data, selecting focus students, ideas for change stories (for much later on), the focus of their research and documentation using LbD placemats and Learning Elements. This meeting ensured new staff felt comfortable about attending and sharing at the upcoming CLuster meeting in week 5.

We have mapped our reading strategies on the learning by design placemat. So far I have implemented one of the placemats with my class. I found it very useful and the students were engaged and understood what the expected learning was. We began the unit on skimming and scanning by completing a pretest. During the pretest the students were only allowed a specific amount of time to locate information from a text. After we had finished the teaching and learning the students completed the post test, which was the same to the pre test. The results show improvement in most of the students skimming and scanning skills. Some students made a dramatic improvement in their results, going from around 30% to 50%. At the moment I am implementing a second placemat on synthesising. I have found mapping on the placemat really allows students to be engaged and experience one concept in many different ways. I particuarly enjoyed a lesson where the students looked at the visual mode in the text. From looking at the pictures and assessing their features and what the effects where, the students created pictures using some of these techniques. Thanks for the idea Rita! :-)
